Foreign Office issues Mexico alert
The Foreign office is warning against all but essential travel to Mexico due to the swine influenza outbreak which has already seen infections within Britain. The world health organisation overnight upgraded it's pandemic alert to level 4, meaning the virus is "showing a sustained ability to pass from human to human, and is able to cause community-level outbreaks."
The Foreign office is advising Britons visiting or resident in Mexico to consider leaving, as well as consulting a doctor immediately if they show signs of flu-like symptoms.
The US government has also reacted swiftly, releasing about a third of it's stockpile of antiviral medication to deal with the emergence of new infections.
The foreign office has also suspended routine visa and consular services at it's Mexico city embassy. Officials are said to be mainly concerned with visitors arriving from Mexico, where more than 150 people have been killed by the virus.
Airports in europe are already screening passengers for symptoms, while TUI and Thomas cook have both announced that Mexico city is being omitted from their itineraries in the country.
